Youth Mentor
Reference: 16601
Job Description
at pace, we believe every young person deserves the chance to discover their potential.
our youth mentors play a key role in helping young people build confidence, wellbeing, and practical skills through
creative, supportive, and hands-on experiences.
this role is ideal for someone who enjoys connecting with others, learning new skills, and making a real difference
— even if it’s your first step into youth work or education.
essential qualities
we’re not looking for perfect cvs — we’re looking for people with heart, motivation, and a genuine desire to help
others.
- a positive and encouraging attitude with the ability to motivate others
- a genuine interest in helping vulnerable or disengaged young people
- a willingness to learn and grow within a supportive environment
- empathy, patience, and good listening skills
- reliability, punctuality, and professionalism
- a commitment to equality, inclusion, and safeguarding
- confidence to engage positively in creative sessions and group activities
desirable qualities
you don’t need these to apply — but if you have them, that’s a bonus:
- experience working or volunteering with young people
- interest or experience in make-up, beauty, or hairdressing
- knowledge of youth work, education, or wellbeing settings
- teamwork and communication skills gained through school, volunteering, or work
- awareness of mental health and the importance of emotional wellbeing
training and support
pace provides full training for all youth mentors, including:
- safeguarding and child protection
- communication and mentoring skills
- creative learning techniques
- employability and personal development workshops
- optional pathways in beauty, make-up, or hair for those with creative interests
all training is delivered in a relaxed, inclusive environment with one-to-one support and regular check-ins from the
pace team.
progression with pace
pace doesn’t just offer a job — it’s the start of a journey.
we help each youth mentor identify their goals and support them every step of the way.
after completing the initial six-month programme, mentors can progress to:
- hlta (higher level teaching assistant)
- youth or behaviour mentor roles in schools
- creative industry pathways in beauty, wellbeing, or education
- starting their own small business with guidance from our industry contacts
progression with pace
after successful completion of the initial training period, participants can progress into:
- hlta (higher level teaching assistant) roles
- youth or behaviour mentor roles in schools
- creative industry opportunities within beauty or wellbeing
- self-employment with guidance from pace’s industry contacts
pace continues to offer coaching, employability support, and professional networking beyond the programme.
what the students really need is someone who can simply listen to them (while safeguarding, of course). many of them come from tough situations, and sometimes they just want to sit down with a cup of tea and talk to someone who genuinely cares. the candidate we are looking for needs to have character above all else. an interest in hair, makeup, or beauty would be a bonus, but not essential.
