Christian came to the UK as a refugee from Cameroon. He didn’t know anyone: he couldn't speak English very well; and he felt very isolated. When he came to Liverpool in Work, his adviser referred him to an ESOL (English Speaking as Other Language) course to help him improve his communication skills. He also recommended security or care work as a way of getting him on his feet.
Christian was happy to follow his advice and he went on to attend security, customer care and social care training courses and gain nationally recognised qualifications. As a result, he grew in confidence; gained new friends; and began to feel more at home in his adopted city.
Between training, his adviser supported him with job searches and putting together an up to date CV. Eventually, all the hard work paid off, and he was offered a full time job with CIO Security. His adviser was also able to offer him a monthly bus pass to cover his travel expenses, so he could concentrate on learning his new role.
Christian has achieved a great deal and come a long way since he arrived in the UK. He said, "Thanks to Liverpool in Work, I was able to get on my feet. I gained the skills and qualifications I needed to get a job. I am so grateful for all their help and support."
